What is your favorite part about belonging to HRAM?

HRAM keeps me connected, both to what is happening in the HR world and to an incredible network of people. After being away for a few years, I realized how much I had missed that sense of community. I rarely leave a meeting without a few hugs, and those genuine connections truly fill my cup.

How has HRAM helped you in your career development?

I am probably in this profession because people truly amaze me, who they are, what drives them, how they interact, and how they grow and change over time. I sit on the recruiting side of HR, which is one piece of the puzzle, but HRAM has helped me see how all the pieces connect. It keeps me close to the broader HR landscape and strengthens how I approach my work. Through those connections, I also find myself reminding others of what the right thing to do is, especially when it comes to putting people first, and that has been an important part of my growth.

Where is your favorite place to be?

This one is pretty easy if you know me at all. My favorite place, no question, is with my family. That will always be number one.

But a very close second is going back to where it all started, where I grew up and where my roots are. I actually ended up in Omaha a bit by accident, but home is still where my 95 year old mama is, along with all of my close family and lifelong friends. There is just something about being surrounded by people who speak my language and walking the same streets I used to walk every day. It grounds me in a way nothing else does and gives me that little je ne sais I cannot quite explain.

Honestly, it is why people do not ask me where I am going this summer. They ask when I am going home!

What's your favorite indoor/outdoor activity?

Being outdoors is hands down my favorite place to be. If I had to choose, it is riding Harleys with my family, and yes, we each have our own. There is just something about it that is hard to put into word. You are surrounded by people, but still in your own lane, taking in the smells, the sounds, and whatever the moment brings. It usually turns into time spent with a great group of friends, which makes it even better. Lately, we have also been getting into antique cars, and that has been just as fun, especially when there are a few puppies along for the ride.

What are 3 words to describe Human Resources?

There are so many words that could be used to describe Human Resources. Civility is the foundation for how you treat people. Sincerity is about being genuine, showing up as a real person. Being honest and compassionate and consistent builds trust and credibility within the role. Finally, Wellness builds culture, it can reshape an organization. Wellness expands the HR role from managing people to sustaining people. It will impact everything the HR role supports. From benefit utilization to performance, wellness is a strategic partner in employee success.

What have you gained from being a member of HRAM?

First and foremost, relationships!!! There's the old saying, "it takes a village", meaning no one succeeds alone. As a member of HRAM, we learn, we grow, we overcome and we tackle workplace challenges together. The role is constantly evolving; shifting laws, changing policies, politics...there are so many variables that tie into what we do each day. Having the HRAM village makes it easier to overcome these challenges. They will guide you with knowledge and solutions that allow us to thrive. People do better when they supported, not isolated!

What would you do (for career) if you weren't doing what you do?

This is a fun question for me. I never in a million years thought I would be in HR. When I was growing up, I wanted to be a travel agent or a police officer. My travel agent life led me to people leading which eventually led me to HR. I think law enforcement will always be an inspiration of mine...for the same reasons why HR has become a passion.

What's your favorite line from a movie?

HANDS DOWN, without even a second thought, my favorite movie line is "Bye, Buddy. Hope you find your dad"!. It's weirdly wholesome and can be quoted in the most oddly random scenarios...and everyone knows...

What is the one thing you cannot resist?

Most things with sugar, coffee, and a good audiobook.

Where is your favorite place to be?

Home with my family and friends or in nature with my family.

What is your role at HRAM?

What is on your wish list for the next 10 years at HRAM?

I would love for HRAM to grow in size as well as the types of offerings we provide. I hope that we lead what I call HR 3.0, supporting the administrative function (1.0), the business partnership aspect of the profession (2.0), and the transition to the new world of work with technology advancements (3.0).

What advice do you have for prospective HRAM members?

Get active and attend as many programs and meet ups as you can. That is how you find your professional community.

What was the most unusual or interesting job you've ever had?

It is a close tie between Door County, Wisconsin and Prague.

What is your favorite part about belonging to HRAM?

My favorite part of belonging to HRAM is the networking. It's fun to meet peers, learn from and about their successes and challenges and make some lasting connections with others in the profession along the way. And HRAM provides a variety of opportunities to make networking happen!

What was the most unusual or interesting job you've ever had?

I took a career "break" from Learning & Development/Human Resources and got a degree in Horticulture. I managed a garden center for a bit and then was a horticulturist for Boys Town. I fell in love with Boys Town's mission and was drawn back into L&D and became a national trainer there. I've remained in L&D and/or HR related roles every since. The horticulture knowledge is a fun conversation starter and helps out my own landscaping (along with many friends and family)!

What is your favorite line from a movie?

Carpe Diem - Seize the Day! from Dead Poets Society...still one of my all-time favorite movies.

What is the first concert you attended?

This will not only give a way a clue as to how old I am, but also one of my "two truths and a lie" answers! My first concert was Elvis Presley...the real one, not an impersonator!

What have you gained from being a member at HRAM?

Relationships. I have met so many new and interesting people through this organization. I love to hear people's back stories and experiences. I also have gained new perspectives on many things as a result of the people I have met.

What is on your wish list for the next 10 years with HRAM?

I hope that HRAM continues to grow and evolve with the needs of businesses and our community. Having a local organization where people can meet, learn, share best practices, network and lean on is so valuable.

What song/music genre is on your iPhone/Android phone?

I am definitely a Classic Rock girl (BTO, Bob Segar, The Eagles), but I'm learning (and liking) more about different genres all the time.

Where is your favorite place to be?

Anywhere I can people watch. I find people fascinating!

What is your favorite part about belonging to HRAM?

I really enjoy the monthly chapter programs and meet-ups, like HR Brew Crew and Happy Hours. They are a great way to connect with other HR professionals in a relaxed setting while also diving into topics that are relevant and useful. Each event offers something new, whether it is a fresh perspective, a practical tip, or simply the chance to exchange ideas with people who understand the field.

What have you gained from being a member at HRAM?

One of the biggest benefits has been building an extensive network of HR professionals I can turn to for insight and advice. Having such a wide range of connections means there's always someone to help answer a question, share a resource, or offer guidance. And on a lighter note, I even won a raffle at a Corner Kick Happy Hour, which was a fun bonus to the many professional benefits HRAM offers.

Where is the best place you've traveled to and why?

Chiang Mai, Thailand. Beyond the incredible food and beautiful scenery, the most memorable part was immersing myself in a culture so different from my own. The way people approached life contrasted greatly with what I was accustomed to in Nebraska. Traveling has also played a part in my HR work, as it has strengthened my ability to understand and appreciate perspectives different from my own.

When you have 30 minutes of free-time, how do you pass the time?

I enjoy taking a quick walk around my neighborhood while calling a family member or friend. It's a great way to catch up and clear my mind.

What has been your favorite program/conference at HRAM?

My favorite HRAM program to date is the May 2025 Chapter program, "Effectively Managing Change" by Dr. Deb Manning. Specifically, her message to normalize change in our organizations. We encounter change in our personal lives on a regular basis including road construction, moving, marriage, divorce, watching our children grow and leave the nest, etc. We should expect regular change in the form of continuous improvement, shifting org charts, and new workspaces to name a few. She was entertaining and informative which is my favorite combination. I am also looking forward to HR Nebraska in August!

What advice do you have for prospective HRAM Members?

Choose to join as an investment in your education and professional network. As a member, attend a social event that works in your schedule and block the time on your calendar. It is so important to build a social network of peers to learn from and with. In my former life as a banker, I attended several peer groups to broaden my connections. Whenever I had a question about a new regulation, vendor, product, or service, I could lean on my network for help and support. When I started at Revela, I was new to the HR community so needed to build a new professional network. I chose First Fridays at Tanners as my go to social event because it worked best with my work hours. It is through my regular attendance that I met members of the Membership Committee and they offered me the role as secretary.

Where is the best place you've traveled to and why?

San Pedro, Belize at the bottom of the Ambergris Caye, hands down. My husband and I took our sons over a Christmas holiday and spent a week exploring the Ambergris Caye and mainland Belize. We went cave tubing, got closer than expected to black howler monkeys and toured Mayan ruins at Altun Ha. The island is low key, and the food is fantastic. The water is a gorgeous shade of blue, and we took a boat tour to Caye Caulker. The whole vacation was super laid back and we are definitely going back someday!

What is the first concert you attended?

Don't judge me but my first concert was Nickelback in my late twenties. I prefer the relaxed vibe of outdoor bars and venues like Stir Concert Cove to big venues. I've had the opportunity to see bands like Wu Tang, Bare Naked Ladies, Gin Blossoms, and Salt n Pepper at Stir from the comfort of a camp chair but I will always suffer through crowds to see Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20. My favorite local band is Charm School Dropouts. They cover some my favorite bands and put on a great show! I think my Gen X is showing.

What do you like most about HRAM?

I enjoy the opportunity to make meaningful connections and learn from knowledgeable colleagues in the industry!

What has been your favorite program/conference at HRAM?

I always like the panes and fireside chats - there was one entitled " You can talk about Mental Health at Work" that really sticks with me as a favorite.

Where is the best place you've traveled to and why?

I love traveling and have been fortunate to explore many places, but New Orleans will always hold a special place in my heart. I visited shortly after Hurricane Katrina and was so inspired by the tenacity - plus, there is nothing like a New Orlean's beignet!

When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time?

Reading! With two littles, I so rarely have time to get lost in a book, but it is such a treat when I do.

How did you first learn about HRAM?

I first learned about HRAM 15 years ago while working in the staffing industry. Most of my career has been spent supporting HR leaders, business owners and finance teams regarding to human capital management. I spent roughly 15 years in the staffing industry and the last 5 years in HCM technology. My interaction with HRAM has picked up over the last year and I love the relationships and knowledge I have gained from being a member!

What has been your favorite program/conference at HRAM?

I really enjoyed the generational program panel last fall (Unlocking the Power of Generational Communication in the Workplace). The conversations that were able to take place by putting several different generations and functionaries on a panel at the same time was fun to watch! The group and the room interacted very well, and it was insightful how subjects and problems could be viewed and approached differently based past experiences and perspectives!

Where is the best place you've traveled to and why?

My wife and I really enjoy the Virgin Islands, specifically St. John! We honeymooned there 20 years ago and have now had the chance to introduce our children to the island and they love it too! The beaches and water are pristine, and the views are breathtaking. We hate to leave and always can't wait to come back!

Do you prefer to cook or eat out?

I really enjoy doing both! Time spent with my family over a meal is always time well spent. But if I had to choose one, it would be cooking at home. I specifically love to spend time in my back yard cooking! I cook on my grill, smoker and flat-top grill and my family enjoys it all! I am to the point where I have a hard time ordering a steak when we are out-to-eat because I can make such a better meal at home!

What advice do you have for prospective HRAM Members?

Reach out, get involved! Everyone is very friendly and willing to help. We are all here to support each other!

What drew you to join HRAM originally? And how has HRAM changed since?

Initially it was an opportunity to be recognized and attend a program/luncheon. In more recent years, I have been drawn to the organization with the guidance of my mentor, Carrie Svendsen, and seeing all the value it can provide. The changes I notice is the extra energy and effort put into different networking opportunities to the bring to the members - to meet them where they are. Rather this the HR Brew Crew, First Friday lunches, or the HR Breakfast Buzz.

What is the one thing you cannot resist?

Time with my wife and kids.

What is the weirdest job you've ever had?

Maybe not weird but possibly interesting: I have worked my whole life, as I grew up working in the Hardware store owned and operated by my parents in a small town in Iowa. It was a family affair, and we all worked at the store.

What is your role at HRAM?

I am thrilled to share that I've recently taken on the role of Programs Committee Co-Chair alongside Andrea Fredrickson. Together with our fantastic Programs Committee, and many other members of the HRAM Board, we generate ideas to create relevant and engaging programming content and events for HRAM members.

What do you like most about HRAM?

For those that know me, connection and relationship building as always been really important to me. One of the most rewarding aspects of being a member of HRAM, and something that I enjoy the most, is the opportunity to network and connect with HR professionals and those in related fields. Whether it's sharing new ideas, leveraging each other’s best practices to take back to my company, or sitting by someone new at a programming event and getting to know them, there is always an opportunity for connection with HRAM.

If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?

If I could pick anyone as a mentor I would choose Cy Wakeman, the founder of Reality-Based Leadership. As an HR professional I have learned so many things from the “Reality-Based Leadership” books and couldn’t recommend them enough! And if you didn’t know – she is a Nebraska native!

Where is your favorite place to be?

I absolutely love being in warm weather, especially on a beach. A trip to Hawaii or California will always rise to the top of my list, which is funny to be saying while it's a chilly 21 degrees here in Omaha today.

What is your role at HRAM?

I serve on the Membership Committee focusing on GenNow Initiatives. With the support of committee members, we create opportunities for the next generation of HR professionals to connect with the HRAM community.

How has HRAM helped you in your career development?

HRAM has been helpful in my development as an HR instructor. By engaging in conversations about current HR trends, I have been able to incorporate these insights into my teaching, ensuring my students are well-prepared for the ever-changing HR landscape. Being part of HRAM has connected me with a diverse group of HR professionals, enhancing my own professional growth while also presenting opportunities for my students to engage with and learn from experienced practitioners.

When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time?

I don't often have free time, but I make the time to take a walk. It's a great way to clear my head and recharge, especially after long stretches of work. Walking helps me reflect, organize my thoughts, and come back with a fresh perspective. It's a small but essential part of maintaining balance in my day.

Describe your career using a movie title or quote.

I'd describe my teaching career with the quote, "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear". It captures the essence of what I do - being there when students are prepared to learn and grow. My role is to guide them at the right moment, providing the knowledge and support they need to take the next step in their journey, whether they realize it or not.

What advice do you have for prospective HRAM Members?

My advice to prospective HRAM Members is to join and invest. Invest in yourselves by fully emerging into the amazing world of Human Resources and use HRAM as your vehicle to explore and navigate every level of each HR competency. Use the content to form your library of reasonable basis on which you build your discernment and intellect in the field. It's such a fulfilling ride!! Enjoy every moment knowing that you will never completely know everything. Have a thirst for knowledge and be willing to share it with others to further strengthen our local HR community.

What is the one thing you cannot resist?

One thing I cannot resist is a great opportunity to collaborate and form strong partnerships. I prefer to work with others as I feel that no one person can accomplish great things without the collaboration and support of others. I love to share; it fills my bucket when I bring something to the table and there is reciprocity.

When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time?

When I have 30 minutes of free time, I do what I can to engage in a workout, walk an incline, sit in the sauna, swim or participate in a physical activity that benefits my fitness and health. It doesn't take much, but I know I have to be intentional about staying strong and healthy.

What drew you to join HRAM? And how has HRAM changed since?

I initially just saw HRAM as a way to learn from HR professionals in the Metro, and a way to put my professional career on the fast track. After diving into HRAM, it is much more - the relationships that you build are greater than just professional, they also help you grow as a person. There is a mindset of mutual respect and learning.

What advice do you have for prospective HRAM Members?

Just try! It seems scary to join various committees or to attend events, but you gain so much by attending. The problems that you are facing have already been solved...sometimes years ago, by your colleagues in HRAM. It's not only okay to ask for help, but it's actually the smart thing to do - HRAM is FULL of smart people! They don't make you feel 'less than', instead they stand alongside you and empower you to succeed.

What is the one thing you cannot resist?

Pepsi! The day I don't have my Pepsi will be a sad day indeed.

What's your favorite indoor/outdoor activity?

I love to go for walks or hikes. Walking around the new Gene Leahy mall is always a treat - I love to see all the people using the space and enjoying it as much as I do! Fresh air and cardio: the perfect ingredients for a happy mind and a happy heart.

What is your role at HRAM?

My role at HRAM is serving on the Board; Co-chairing the DEI Committee with the wonderful Ralph Kellogg; Co-leading the IDEAL committee with 2023 Volunteers of the Year Award Winners, Aimee Gibson and Laura Brooks Dueland; and being the HRAM Liaison to the Omaha Chamber's CODE Team.

What is your favorite part about belonging to HRAM?

I love the profound connection I share with fellow HRAM members. For those acquainted with me, it's no secret that I enjoy networking and relationship-building. Through my dedication to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), I not only share valuable best practices, but I also learn so much from others. Serving in a leadership capacity within HRAM has provided me the opportunity to forge meaningful connections with numerous professionals, and it has opened a multitude of opportunities. I am so thankful for the professional relationships, many of which have turned into lifelong friendships.

Where is your favorite place to be?

My favorite place to be is wherever my family is! Our son travels for work every other week, so we love spending time with him when he is back in Omaha. Our daughter lives in London, so we try to plan several visits there each year! If you've never been to London, it's a wonderful place to visit. I can help you plan your itinerary!

When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time?

In my free time, I most enjoy being with my family. Dave, Derek, and Alysha. Dave and I will celebrate our 40th Wedding Anniversary this summer! We have two Parti Yorkie sisters, Stella and Sailor, from Little White Dog Rescue. I also find joy in caring for my plants, reading non-fiction and learning!

What is your proudest moment at or for HRAM?

My proudest moment at HRAM is being nominated for the spotlight because for the first time in my life, I finally have a group of peers who do not define me by my disability, they define me by my knowledge and professional credentials.

What is your favorite part about belonging to HRAM?

My favorite part of HRAM is meeting a lot of wonderful people and working with them to help HRAM be the best it can be.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

I would like to learn how to teach people to stop seeing the wheelchair, before they see me.

If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?

I would choose President D. Roosevelt because he was disabled and achieved a position of power and respect.

What is your favorite part about belonging to HRAM?

My favorite aspect of being a part of HRAM is the networking opportunities it provides. The members of HRAM are not only kind and helpful, but also supportive from the start. They offer resources to aid in success, whether through making new connections, assisting with resume building and review, or collaborating to stay informed about the latest trends. HRAM is a community that genuinely celebrates and encourages professional growth!

What advice do you have for prospective HRAM Members?

In respect to prospective HRAM members, my advice is to take the leap and actively participate! While it may feel intimidating initially, I can assure you that the experience will be rewarding, and you'll receive as much, if not more, than you contribute.

What is your favorite place to be?

My favorite place to be is riding a roller coaster at a theme park. There's an undeniable thrill and excitement that comes with each twist and turn, making it an exhilarating experience every time. I can happily state that I have never met a roller coaster that I did not enjoy!

What is your favorite line from a movie?

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it", Ferris Bueller in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

I am extremely excited about joining the Human Resource Association of the Midlands (HRAM) Board of Directors as the Assistant Treasurer and look forward to engaging and networking with the unique collection of leaders, change agents, and community advocates in the group.

What are three words to describe Human Resources?

Live Your Creed. Live Your Creed is a poem written by Langston Hughes, about leadership and how leading by example is more important than just spoken words and/or advice. The poem's opening line stating, "I'd rather see a sermon than to hear one any day..." provides the appropriate framework and direction that allows me, as an HR professional, to continuously grow, learn, and positively impact others within my circle of influence.

What is your proudest moment at or for HRAM?

My proudest moment for HRAM to date was when I was designated to present both the city of Omaha Mayor's office and the State of Nebraska Governor's office Diversity Proclamations to the City of Omaha at the Scott Conference Center during HRAM's annual Diversity Training month.

What is the one thing you cannot resist?

I cannot resist the opportunity to build collaborative personal, spiritual, and professional relationships through an ongoing expansion of my circle(s) of influence and networking opportunities.

When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time?

My favorite way to pass the time is through ENGAGEMENT. My personal mission statement is to positively impact others through perseverance and resiliency by identifying what each of us uniquely "brings to the party"!

How has HRAM helped you in your career development?

HRAM has been a life saver to me in so many ways. When I was transitioning into HR, I participated in the HRAM study sessions to prepare for the SPHR exam. I was able to connect with people during the session, many of whom I now consider friends, and following the advice of the instructors, I successfully passed the SPHR on the first attempt. I rely on the HRAM network to learn about best practices, legal updates, and other trends occurring within the HR arena. the Nebraska HR Community is great, and HRAM does an amazing job of keeping everyone within the community connected and informed.

What do you find the most challenging about Human Resources?

It is a bit of a double-edged sword, but it is the changing nature of the employment landscape. It is great on one hand that no day is ever the same, but the world of HR changes at the rate of societal changes. When you think about what everyone went through with COVID, and how that experience changed how and when people work, and now with the advent of AI, HR practitioners must make a concerted effort to stay apprised of the external environment. Sooner or later, what happens externally will impact the organization.

What would you do (for a career) if you weren't doing what you do?

I would be an author and public speaker. I love to write, and I love to tell stories. I think is such power in connecting with people through story telling. I love it when people can be vulnerable and share something of meaning that leaves the listener asking for more. That is how relationships are formed and connections are made.

What is the first concert you attended?

Tina Turner Private Dancer in 1984. I became a fan of Tina Turner in 1984 and remained an admirer of her music until her passing in 2023. I was fortunate to see Tina Turner perform four times. For me, Tina Turner represented strength, perseverance and someone who overcame obstacles to craft a life of meaning and joy.

How did you first learn about HRAM?

I first learned about HRAM through the UNO student chapter faculty advisor, Dr. Patricia Meglich. I became President in the fall of 2022 and was introduced to the chapter partners SHRM, HRAM, and UNO Student Organizations.

What advice do you have for prospective HRAM members?

The advice I have for prospective HRAM members, specifically students: get involved! A SHRM student membership give you a free membership to HRAM and the more resources you have, the better!

Where is your favorite place to be?

My favorite place to be is on the beach.

What would you do (for a career) if you weren't doing what you do?

If I was not in Human Resources, I would be a travel journalist.
